The influence of pyrite pre-oxidation in alkaline solutions on gold recovery by cyanidation from Twin Creek refractory gold ore in which pyrite was identified as the major sulfide mineral has been investigated with the aid of electrochemical measurements, leaching experiments, and direct analysis of reaction products for selected residues.
Abstract. Cyanidation has been used to extract gold (and silver) from ores, concentrates, and calcines since the 1890s. The precipitation of gold from cyanide solutions by zinc cementation was patented in 1884 and was applied industrially as early as the cyanidation process.
The most important constituents are cyanide species and heavy metal ions, which are considered in the following sections. The control of other solution components and conditions (e.g., sulfate, chloride, and nitrate concentrations, pH, conductivity, turbidity, etc.) may also be important under particular circumstances; however, specific methods for their control are not considered further here.
